Most people will be knowing the process of getting a US VISA. The pain here is that they keep on tweaking the procedure every now and then and it becomes really difficult to keep up with the changes that they make.

I had applied as on October and the procedure was as below:

STEPS

1. Complete the Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application (DS-160) form on given link

2. Pay the visa application fee.
If you are a first-time user, click New User? to create your profile.
3. Choose the Schedule Appointment option. On the payment confirmation screen you will be presented with payment options and further details of how to initiate payment. Note it can take up to 2 business days from time of payment for your receipt to be activated
·         You must schedule two appointments, one for the OFC and one for the visa interview at the Embassy or Consulate.
·         First, schedule your visa interview appointment at the Embassy or Consulate.
·         Second, schedule your Offsite Facilitation Center (OFC) appointment. This appointment will allow you to go to one of the five OFC locations to have your fingerprints and photo taken. This appointment must be at least 1 day before your visa interview appointment at the Embassy or Consulate.
Schedule your appointment on this web page. You will need three pieces of information in order to schedule your appointment:
·         Your passport number
·         The date you paid your fee.
·         The ten (10) digit barcode number from your DS-160 confirmation page
4. For your Offsite Facilitation Center (OFC) appointment, you will need to bring:
·         A passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions). If more than one person is included in your passport, each person desiring a visa must submit an application.
·         Your DS-160 confirmation page.
·         Your appointment confirmation page.
5. Following your visit to the OFC to have your photo and fingerprints taken, you will then visit the U.S. Embassy or Consulate on the date and time of your visa interview. You will need to bring:
·         A printed copy of your appointment letter,
·         Your DS-160 confirmation page, one photograph taken within the last six months,
·         Your current and all old passports, and the
·         Original visa fee payment receipt.
Applications without all of these items will not be accepted.

Once done, based on your OFC appointment centre, you need to go at least one day in advance to get your fingerprints and photograph taken at the OFC. This is just a 5-10 minutes affair, but the problem is you need to go to the nearest location for this to be done.
Since I am from Bangalore, I had opted for Chennai as the OFC.

The address is as below:
No. 3, Cenotaph Road,
Teynampet,
Chennai - 600018

This location is very difficult to spot/ locate even to the locals. There is no proper signages and even the auto-drivers are not aware of this road.
I have put forth a rough route map that will be helpful in finding this location:
At the gate of that office, a security will check if you have Appointment letter, DS-160 and the passport. They will not allow us to take anything else and there is no option of any security locker facilities and so you need to definitely leave all the stuff in the hotel room, including mobiles and all electronic devices.

Once you enter the premises, you need to get to the first/ second floor(don't remember exactly).
There will be a couple of officers there who will ask your time slot, check the documents and send you in.
There is an air-conditioned room inside where there are around 8-10 counters. You will be called upon in one of the counters where they will scan the fingerprints of all our fingers(both hands) and also take a digital photograph. They will check the documents and passport as well.

This is it at the OFC.

After you get this done, you need to go for another appointment at the US consulate.
US consulate address is:
US Consulate General, Chennai
Gemini Circle,
220, Anna Salai,
Chennai 600 006

This place is very easy to locate as it is pretty close to the bridge and most times you will find a queue of people standing outside to get into the US Consulate.
Moreover, it is located inside the OUP - OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS campus and that will be easy to find out.
Earlier it is the better to get into this premises. Here again, they will only allow the passport, appointment letters, DS docs and supporting documents and no form of electronic devices. There is a small tea shop nearby where you can deposit your valuables, but I personally did not do this and kept all my belongings in my hotel room. It is upto your discretion.
They will check all the documents once again and give you a token once you enter the premises. When your turn comes based on token and counter number(similar to bank teller system), you need to get to the counter with the documents.
There will be many counters in here and some Indian officials will ask some basic questions. After this, you will be batched and sent to the main consulate office. Here again, the same token is valid and the same system prevails. When your turn comes, you will need to go to the respective counter. An US official will ask a few questions regarding job, family, work, company, purpose of visit, salary, duration of stay, etc...
The person who interviewed me was a friendly guy who at the end of the interview informed me that my VISA got approved. Of course I went for B1 visa and that is relatively easier to get. By this time, you would have deposited the passport and you will be informed that you will get SMS as well as email notification for picking up the passport.
This again has to be done at the VFS document collection centres and the address for that one in Bangalore is  as below:

Prestige Atrium  2nd Floor  Unit No. 304, Bangalore,  560001

This office is very close to MG road/ Shivaji Nagar bus stand. This is located opposite to Hotel Empire and the road(called Central Street) is parallel to Infantry Road and so you can ask any person on these landmarks and they will be able to guide you.

Here again, there are certain rules that will surprise you.

You will get an email that your document is picked from the US Embassy. Due to technical glitches, this usually is not happening properly.
I waited for 8 working days and reached the centre regardless of the email confirmations.

You need to carry a Government Authorized Identity Proof with a photocopy to this place.
The office works on Monday to Friday from 10-4 PM ONLY.
You cannot carry laptops to this office. They will check and then only allow you inside and give you a token.
Then, based on the token number, you will be called and they will take note of your details like appointment letter copy and photo identity card.
They will then give you the passport sealed in envelope if they have received it from the courier service.

This is the whole procedure in getting a US VISA.

    2. that was a spam post advertising for the 'budget class hotels'. these bots just post the same generic message to random blogs.

In any case, thanks for the detailed blog post. Useful to read about real experiences rather than conflicting 'facts' from 'authorized sources'

In New US visa/ofc profile registration, there is fee waiver option. There are many points. One such is there any recent visa refusal.Since 10 yrs back immegration visa is refused. In hurry yes option is hitted. Now drop box option is not allowing to proceed further for appointment.Actually i paid the fees through axis. Now it seems it has gone back to account.I learnt that it takes 48 hrs for reactivation. My question is whether the same fee will be allowed or I have to pay once again Note: still i have not taken any appointment.Due to accidental hitting of waiver option key,I could not proceed further for appointment.Bank official say we dont know anything, you can call call centre and find out.Can any one give ionfo on this to indhrecruiter@gmail.com

  9. This info is still very relevant. I just did this for my mother on Aug/26. From my experience, I had to start Step 3 (scheduling a visa appointment), before I could complete Step 2 (paying the visa fees). This put Step 3 in a suspended state, till Step 2 was completed, and then i completed Step 3.

Interesting twists in Step 2: i could not find convenient locations to pay the visa fees and lucked out when the AXIS bank in MG Road said they accept such fees (could not find this info that AXIS bank in MG Road accepts such payment anywhere). then when i went to pay the visa fees in AXIS bank in MG Road, they asked for a copy of my mother's passport & this again is not mentioned anywhere.

also, u can use the following URL to track the status of your passport after u have left it at the US embassy:

    1. Another tip: Make sure all details on the DS-160 cover page that you print are correct. The VFS staff in Chennai will check documents and will ask you to bring a reprint if there is even a small error. A huge racket operates around these "corrections" - auto drivers charge Rs. 100-150 to take hundreds of applicants 0.5 km down the road to a centre where staff are waiting to make corrections and print you a new DS-160 for Rs. 150. This is particularly problematic because the staff collects the answer to everyone's secret question ie then know where you live, work, all details, of your family etc! If you do make an error walk back up the road past the Apollo Cancer Center - there are many internet centres where you can do the same thing for Rs. 10. If you must go with the auto driver to the center make sure you enter your details yourself and do not allow the centre staff accessing them.

  10. How long does it take for the passport to reach bangalore once approved? Is 4 working days enough?

    ReplyDelete
  11. one confusing tern used is "original visa fee receipt" needed for biometrics/visa appointment. the appointment confirmation page has all these details:biometerics appointment slot, visa interview slot, barcodes for all DS-160 & visa fee paid. the fact that appointment has been booked can only happen after MRV fees have been paid. there is NO other visa fee receipt required (apart from bar codes in appointment confirmation page)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. confirming after actual visit: appointment confirmation page is all you need, that barcodes have DS-160 and payment info. this paper suffices all the way until passport collection from VFS centers

      Delete
  12. Another confusing thing mentioned in this blog is bringing "one passport" photograph even after biometrics is done at OFC. OFC/biometrics appointment done before the actual interview takes the photos (for adults). There are no photographs needed. Only exception is kids below 14 years who would not have visited OFC/biometrics so they need paper photograph.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. confirming after the actual visit: NO paper photographs are needed since they take digital snaps, except for minors (they take snap of the snap provided!)

  14. re: passport collection from VFS center from Bangalore - I am planning to collect for Self (and spouse, and two minor kids). I will carry appointment receipt + my photoID: should suffice for myself & kids. what about spouse: does she need to issue and authorization letter so that I can collect her passport?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. update after actual pickup: showing govtID card for self & kids suffices (no photocopy needed). for spouse, you should have an authorization letter from her with photocopy of her as well as yours govtID card mentioned. other than that process is quite smooth and efficient, takes around 15 minutes

since I did not have that but I did have both our PAN cards in original, they accepted a letter from me (as representative) mentioning that I was collecting my spouse's passport -- but better have authorization letters from each adult (even if within family)

  17. Hello, I selected 29th May for Consulate interview and 28th May for OFC. However the OFC appointment is showing 14th May. We as a family cannot visit Chennai twice as we stay about 700 kms away. Is OFC very strict about the appointment day. Do I have to cancel and reschedule the appointment. Can I reschedule only OFC appointment. Do you have any contact number for OFC. Any guidance will be highly appreciated.

  22. A very detailed and informative article. Last week we drove for the appointment from Bangalore to Chennai and we experienced pretty much whatever is mentioned here. Parking was a nightmarish experience. Though our car was parked more than 100 m away from the sign that prohibited parking within 100 m, a traffic cop left a chit on our car with his mobile number on it. The front wheel of our car was locked.
As soon as we called on that number, a police vehicle emerged and the cop asked us to pay up Rs. 475 as fine. When we asked if he would issue a receipt for it, he told us to drive to the nearest police station with one of his peers.
There they agreed to issue a receipt but did not give it to us until we greased their palms. After harassing us for more than half an hour, they settled for Rs.100 which we unwillingly paid up as we were determined not to leave without the receipt. Moreover we were in a hurry to drive back to Bangalore. The receipt given to us showed an amount of only Rs. 100.
Moral: Park somewhere very far from the Consulate and pray that your car is safe for a couple of hours. Travelling by auto is not a good option as auto drivers fleece you. But when you drive your own car, traffic cops fleece you!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sorry for the confusion. The fine amount was Rs. 100 and the palm greasing amount Rs 100. How did the first cop arrive at the magical figure of Rs. 475??? This incident has left me pondering. Is there some way these greedy cops can be taught a lesson? How can corruption ever be rooted out? Will a nation free of corruption remain just a dream for us?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Even I went through the same situation. Traffic police asked me to pay 475/- . when I asked wht is that number and said it is too high.. That police responded saying.. "It is chennai's fine..". I was kind of helpless..Don't know exactly what to do. I don't even have time to argue with him. Finally he took 300/- . So, every one can keep in mind that there is no parking space near to consulate.. Wondering why they did not even think of arranging one. The road next to the Oxford University where I parked has lot of cars and autos being parked.. This will not become an obstacle to the commuters there. But still... remember it is chennai's rule and arrangement to grab money from the ppl who come in cars and trouble them.

  33. Thanks a lot for sharing clear details regd US visa procurement process
I had applied for B2 visa and during the process found your article very useful!

    Sharing from my experience here:

I had scheduled biometric OFC and visa interview one week apart.

I went 1 hour before the scheduled time for biometric process. The people in-charge allowed me to complete the process with lasted less than 10 min. No electronic gadgets and food items were allowed. If you are being accompanied by someone for the biometric process, they will have to wait max of only 15 min.

For the visa interview, I had scheduled at 9:30am and reached the US consulate at 8:30am. No electronic gadgets and food items were allowed. It is better to go early as there was a huge queue there by the time I got in. They verified the finger prints and then there was a queue for the interview. Interview lasted around 5 min for me for B2 visa. I was out of the consulate by 9:15am (15 min before my scheduled time). It is better to go early!

My interview was at Chennai on Friday. Tuesday I got mail from US consulate that my passport arrived at Bangalore pick-up location. I went there with govt ID proof and a copy along with DS-160 confirmation form. I was asked to switch off my phone. I did not take any food items with me. I got my passport and was asked to check if it is correct (name/details,etc). It took less than 10 min.

    Wish you all the best!
